PREPARATION
How to Prepare for Your Visit
A little preparation goes a long way toward making your first treatment as effective and comfortable as possible.
Eat a light meal beforehand
Don't come on an empty stomach — a light meal 1–2 hours before your appointment helps prevent lightheadedness during treatment.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing
Clothing that can be easily rolled up to the elbows and knees is ideal. Acupuncture points are located throughout the body.
Avoid caffeine and antihistamines beforehand
Caffeine can affect your pulse quality, which is an important diagnostic tool in Chinese medicine. If you can safely avoid antihistamines, do, as they can interfere with the positive effects of acupuncture. Try to avoid them for 1–2 hours before your visit.
Complete your intake forms early
Finishing your paperwork at least 24 hours in advance gives me time to review your history so we can spend more of your appointment on treatment.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles used are very fine — much thinner than a hypodermic needle, almost as thin as a hair — and insertion is usually painless. You may feel a brief poke, which fades quickly, followed by a sensation of heaviness, tingling, or warmth at the needle site, which is a sign that the point is activating. I work slowly and check in with you throughout.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies depending on your condition and how long you've been experiencing it. Acute issues often resolve in a few sessions; chronic conditions typically benefit from a longer course of care. After your first visit, I'll share my recommended treatment plan and we'll discuss what makes sense for your situation.
Do you accept insurance?
I currently operate on a cash-pay basis. Superbills are available upon request for potential out-of-network reimbursement through your insurance provider. I am actively credentialing with Moda Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield — ask about my current status when you book. I also help patients after motor vehicle accidents.
What should I do after my treatment?
Plan for a gentle rest of the day if possible. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heavy meals for the rest of the day. Many patients feel deeply relaxed after treatment — this is normal and a good sign that your body is responding.
Can I receive acupuncture if I'm pregnant?
Yes — acupuncture can be a wonderful support during pregnancy, and it's one of my areas of special interest. Please let me know at the time of booking so I can plan your treatment appropriately. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy and there are different ways to position you so you are comfortable depending on which trimester you are in. Your care will be adjusted accordingly.
Still not sure if acupuncture is right for you?
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can ask questions and we can determine if we're a good fit before you commit to an appointment. No pressure, no obligation.
